2027 Teacher of the Year & 2026 School-Related Employee of the Year
In a highly anticipated announcement, Citrus County Schools is thrilled to announce two outstanding honorees. Michelle Cleary, a 3rd grade teacher at Hernando Elementary School, has been named the 2027 Teacher of the Year. We also proudly recognize Linnet Calise, Career Advisor at Withlacoochee Technical College, as the 2026 School-Related Employee of the Year.
Superintendent Dr. Scott Hebert revealed this year’s winners during the Galaxy of Stars celebration, hosted by the Citrus County Education Foundation at the College of Central Florida on Monday, November 17th. The honorees—selected from an impressive group of finalists—were recognized along with all finalists during the ceremony.
Ms. Cleary, a 3rd-grade teacher at Hernando Elementary School, is known for her attentiveness to students, creating a classroom environment where they feel both challenged and inspired. She frequently stays after school to develop detailed, engaging lessons and continually researches new strategies to strengthen math and science instruction. Her dedication is reflected in her students’ success; she invests time, encouragement, and high expectations in every learner. Over the years, three of her students have earned a perfect score on the state’s end-of-year math assessment, a testament to her commitment to academic excellence.
Linnet Calise, Career Advisor at Withlacoochee Technical College (WTC), is recognized for her 24 years of dedicated service and strong commitment to student success. Throughout her tenure, she has guided countless students and served as the advisor for the National Technical Honor Society. Calise also provides leadership on campus by facilitating support staff meetings, promoting professional growth opportunities, and training employees as a Citrus 6 trainer. She plays an active role in community engagement as well, including coordinating WTC’s participation in the Skelebration fundraiser benefiting individuals with disabilities. Known as a mentor, leader, and problem-solver, Calise continues to champion the success of both students and staff.
A total of 51 teachers and school-related employees from 27 schools and district service departments were honored during the ceremony for their dedication and outstanding contributions to the school district. Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Greco and Director of Community Relations and District Initiatives Darrick Buettner served as emcees, sharing accolades for each recipient and adding lighthearted commentary throughout the evening.
“Tonight, we celebrate the extraordinary teachers and school-related employees who give their hearts and energy to our students every day,” said Shaunda Burdette, Executive Director for the Education Foundation. “Their dedication ensures that every child in Citrus County has the opportunity to grow, succeed, and reach their potential. This event is a reminder that public education is worth celebrating, and that our community stands united in support of our schools and our children’s future.”
Jamil Namey, 2025 District School-Related Employee of the Year, delivered an inspiring speech that highlighted the vital role support staff play in the success of teachers and students. He emphasized how their dedication behind the scenes—from preparing classrooms to assisting with daily operations—directly impacts student learning and helps create a positive, thriving educational environment. His words encouraged all support staff to continue going above and beyond in their essential work.
Autumn Crabtree, our 2026 Citrus County Teacher of the Year and a Florida Teacher of the Year Finalist, delivered a heartfelt speech on the profound impact of teaching. She also shared a video featuring students and staff from across the district expressing to nominees how much they are appreciated and the difference they make in their communities. There was not a dry eye in the house.
We would like to thank the Citrus County Education Foundation for its continuous support of this event and awarding each nominee $50 and both winners $500. It’s because of the foundation and its giving sponsors that this event is fully funded at no cost to the district.
A special thank you to Jenkins Auto Group, who awarded our Teacher of the Year, Michelle Cleary with a Dodge Hornet. Jenkins matched the Education Foundation’s prize to Mrs. Calise, School-Related Employee of the Year, with an additional $500. Mrs. Calise also received a 7-night resort stay in Kissimmee. Our partners at Coke Florida also gave each winner tickets to Busch Gardens theme parks. Each winner will receive a check from the State of Florida. That amount has yet to be determined.
The evening was made possible with the generous support of our sponsors: JM Gibson Mechanical, Suncoast Credit Union, Jenkins Auto Group and many more. This night would not be possible without the support and generosity of our local businesses.
